Wheel - information

Diameter

The choice of the diameter is mainly dependent on your Skates application.

Our size-introduction:
Speed/races: 84 – 110 mm
Fitness/ advanced learner: 76 – 90 mm
Just for fun/ beginners: 72 – 80 mm
Hockey: 68 – 80 mm
Stunt/ aggressiv: 47 – 62 mm
Inline-Alpin: 80 – 84 mm

Speedskater normally drive wheels with a diameter between 84 millimetres and 110 millimeters. Normally now are 100 and 110-Millimeter wheels, but also 84 millimeters are established.

With larger wheels at higher quiet running higher speeds can be achieved. The greater the role, the higher the possible final speed. A small disadvantage of the large wheels: Skater with smaller wheels are easily advantaged in the Sprint, at slopes and frequent the constant change of tempo. And: Skater with large wheels have more standing hight.

Fitness and Just-for-fun skater go mostly wheels with a diameter of 72 millimetres and 90 millimetres. Whether extensive tours, the trip to the ice cream parlor at the weekend or the first Marathonrace, with these wheelsize everything is possible. However, also in fitness-skating there is a trend to major wheels. Although Fitness-skater do not have any ambition to a competition, they frequently use the benefits of 84, 90, 100 or 110-Millimeter wheels in long distances.

At Inline-Alpin there is no right or wrong wheelsize. Most skaters go here by 80 or 84-Millimeter wheels.

Wheel-hardness

The Wheel-hardness will be measured on A scale. It influences driving conditions, the durability, the damping features, the grip and the recoil. The higher the value in front of the "a" is, the harder the precise mixture. Soft wheels usually offer a better grip, a stronger rebound and more comfortable running characteristics, but they often dissipate faster. Harder wheels have a longer durability and by tend they are faster. It is quite possible to combine different wheel-hardnesses under your skate to optimize the running characteristics. Moreover, it should bear in mind that the information about the hardness from manufacturer partly notwithstanding the actually measured values. It also affects the quality of the wheel or rather of the PU's the running characteristics crucial. Not any soft wheel is necessarily slower than a hard wheel. It depends on the mixture of the wheel. Hardness introduction: Hardness introduction: Speed/ race: 80 - 88a (indoor > 90a) Fittness/ advanced learner: 78 – 84a Just for fun/ beginners: 78 – 80a Hockey: 72 – 86a Stunt/ aggressive: 88 – 100a Inline-Alpin: 73 – 85a The material of the wheel tread: The wheel tread of inlineskate-wheels are from polyurethane (pu) except continental-wheels and not from rubber as is often suspected. The quality of polyurethane (pu) mix decides significantly about the running characteristics of a wheel. Unfortunately, the actually chemical compositionin can not be seen purely visually. With some experience you can notice differences at least subjective in the wheel-resistance, damping and grip. Clear objective are our wheeltests. At the wheeltest we measure how far the wheel coasting , the rebound behavior as well as the grip of their respective speewheel. More information on this and the results of the last set of tests can be found on our homepage.

The rim or rather the core: The crucial difference between the diffent cores is next to design the size of the bearing-acceptance and mass distribution. The bearing-acceptance is conceived either for the standard bearings (608) or for the much smaller and lighter micro-bearings (688). Moreover, it is possible to use an adapter for to mount the smaller 688er beraings in a wheel with a standard 608er bearing-acceptance. Important at the mass distribution is that rims which have the centre of mass near their rotation center (the axle) accelerate faster. Wheels with closed rims are therefore more likely to hockey and stunt-skating. Wheels with rims, whose focus is away from the axle, rotate longer and are therefore mainly for fitness and speed-skating.
